Cordon-Waldman, M.A., is the Assistant Dean of Academic Life and Director of Health Professions Advising at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pennsylvania. She has advised students at Muhlenberg since 1999, holding roles including Director of the Career Center and Director of Pre-Professional Advising. As the college’s sole health professions advisor, she also serves as the faculty adviser for Muhlenberg’s chapter of Alpha Epsilon Delta (AED), the national prehealth honor society, and as a Regional Director for the AED national office.

Cailín earned a Bachelor of Arts in biology from Lehigh University and a Master of Arts in counseling from Eastern Kentucky University. She is a doctoral candidate in the University of North Georgia’s Higher Education Leadership and Practice program, where her dissertation research focuses on the experiences of at-promise students at a non-elite private liberal arts college. She is currently Treasurer of the Northeast Association of Advisors for the Health Professions (NEAAHP) and has served as a member at-large and conference co-chair for the 2021 and 2023 regional conferences.

Cordon-Waldman received four nominations, the most of any advisor this year. One student, now a third-year medical student, described how her guidance shaped a path to medicine as a first-generation college student: “From my very first semester, Cailín provided clarity, structure, and direction. She did far more than review course schedules. She thoughtfully advised me on which classes would not only fulfill prerequisites but also genuinely prepare me for the rigor of medical training… Cailín ensured that students like me were not disadvantaged by a lack of access to insider knowledge.”

Another nominator, now in medical school, credited her with pushing students toward leadership: “As AED elections approached, she pulled me aside after our biweekly general meeting and personally challenged me to step into a leadership role I had not previously envisioned for myself… She treated the organization’s successes as her own; my mission became her mission.” A third student, now enrolled in dental school, added that “Cailin made this transition seamless… I know that I speak for many pre-health students at Muhlenberg College when I say that she was extremely helpful in navigating the path to attending a post-graduate health professional program.”

2026 Post Graduate Advisor of the Year: Robert-André Rarig, Ph.D., Temple University

Robert-André Rarig, Ph.D.

Robert-André “Bob” Rarig, Ph.D., is the Director of the College of Science and Technology Postbaccalaureate Pre-Health Program at Temple University in Philadelphia. A first-generation science student, he earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Penn State University in 2003 and a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in 2010. After lecturing in organic chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania, he helped launch Temple’s postbaccalaureate program in 2015 and has served as curriculum consultant, organic chemistry instructor, academic and prehealth adviser, linkage director, and, since 2023, Program Director.

Rarig is an active member of the advising community. He has helped coordinate the Philadelphia advising network meetings since 2020, served as a member and co-chair of committees with both the National Association of Advisors for the Health Professions (NAAHP) and the Northeast Association of Advisors for the Health Professions (NEAAHP), and has participated as an at-large member of the NEAAHP board. He says he loves working with postbaccalaureate students because of their willingness to adapt their career paths, academic approaches, and priorities to make a positive impact.

Rarig also received four nominations. A non-traditional student with a young child wrote: “One meeting with Dr. Rarig, and you know that he is deeply invested in the future of the students that he advises… (He) challenged me, pushed me, and mentored me. He believes in me, even when my faith grows weary. He is innovative and customized the pace of the program to fit my family and life’s demands.”

Another nominator emphasized his honesty and accessibility: “Dr. Rarig does much more than advise on course selection. He takes the time to understand each student’s background, especially those of us who are non-traditional or transitioning from previous careers. He recognizes the courage it takes to start over and meets that courage with thoughtful, strategic direction… Because of his mentorship, students leave advising meetings with clarity, confidence, and a renewed sense of purpose.”

2026 Community College Advisor of the Year: Lu Dao, DVM, Los Angeles Pierce College

Lu Dao, DVM

Lu Dao, DVM, is a veterinarian and the Chair of the Agriculture Department at Los Angeles Pierce College in Woodland Hills, California. As a child, he lived across the street from the college and used the campus farm as his playground. He attended Pierce College before transferring to the University of California, Davis School of Veterinary Medicine to earn his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. After working as a large animal veterinarian in private practice and for a local animal shelter, he returned to Pierce at the invitation of a former professor and mentor and discovered a passion for teaching.

Dr. Dao has since held numerous leadership roles at Pierce College, including Director of the Registered Veterinary Technician Program, and currently serves as Professor, Department Chair, Campus Veterinarian, Director of the Pre-Veterinary Medicine Program, faculty adviser for the Veterinary Sciences Club, and Chair of the Agriculture Advisory Committee.

Dr. Dao was nominated by a pre-veterinary student who described how a single question reframed his approach to his studies: “He listened carefully, then asked me a simple straightforward question that reshaped my mindset: ‘What are you doing today that reflects the veterinarian you want to become?’… From that point forward, I stopped studying just to pass exams and began studying to master the material.” The student also credited him with steady, compassionate support during a personal hardship, writing that “he did not lower expectations out of sympathy, nor did he ignore the weight of my situation,” and concluded that he “exemplifies what an advisor should be: rigorous, compassionate and deeply invested in the growth of his students.”

About the Award

The Advisor of the Year recognition was created by the HPSA Student Advisory Council in 2022 to recognize outstanding advisors. Previous recipients include leaders of prehealth advising offices, physicians in the community, and professors, joined by the common desire to make a difference in students’ lives.

This year the council expanded the program again by adding a Community College Advisor of the Year category. “Community colleges are where so many students take their first steps toward a health career, and the advisors there change the trajectory of those journeys,” said Alexander Salas, a member of the council. “We wanted to make sure those advisors are recognized alongside their peers at four-year and post-graduate programs.”

The council received 19 nominations for 13 advisors this year. “The strength and number of the nominations made our decision difficult, which is a wonderful problem to have,” said Denis Solomes, SAC member. “It is a reminder of how many great advisors are quietly helping students reach their goals.”

“As current prehealth and health professional students, we rely on the guidance of our advisors every day,” added Chloe Wilson, SAC member. “We are honored to recognize these professionals for the time, care, and belief they invest in us.”

Three advisors recognized for outstanding student advising, including a new community college honor The Health Professional Student Association Student Advisory Council today announced that three advisors have been selected as recipients of its 2006 Advisor of the Year recognition.
